2016 Autumn Term 1 - Invaders and Settlers
This term in Year 3 and 4 our topic is Invaders and Settlers and we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. The children will learn about how Britain changed as a result of these settlements and invasions.
In Maths we will start by learning about the place value of numbers before moving onto measures, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will be focusing on using practical and pictorial representations to consolidate our understanding of the processes and methods.
In English we will be reading and writing legends focusing on the use of powerful description and dialogue. In our non-fiction writing we will be writing to inform.
Autumn 2 - Animals and France
This term we will have two smaller topics. The first one will be Animals and then we will be learning about France.
In our Animals topic we will be learning about how to classify living things and will be looking for evidence of living things around the school grounds. We will also learn why it is important to be able to classify things into groups and the key characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, vertebrates and invertebrates. Our English will all be inspired by story The Animals and Farthing Wood by Colin Dann. We will be writing play scripts and persuasive letters. In maths we will revisiting number and place value and learning about fractions.
In our France topic we will be learning about the human and physical features of France and comparing these to the UK. We will be learning about French cuisine and will cook and taste a selection of French recipes. In English we will create a guide book to France which will include informative and persuasive writing. In maths we will be learning how to tell the time on digital and analogue clocks and column methods for addition and subtraction.
Spring 1 - Light and Sound
This term our topic is Light and Sound. In art we will be learning how to sketch with pencils and charcoal and will be focussing on the skills of shading to create light and shadow. In Science we will learn about light and sound and carry out a number of experiments to learn about these and test out our ideas. In English we will be listening to a spooky story called The Ghost Thief and then using this as our inspiration to write our own spooky and scary stories. In maths we will be revisiting the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and practising these in the context of measures. We will also be learning about the properties of 2d and 3d shapes in Geometry.
